The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
